Dear Subscriber,

It’s been another busy month here at Grow Me The Money and we’re very happy to report that more people than ever have signed up to the program this month! We welcomed 59 new businesses to the Grow Me The Money program in August.

Perhaps that has had something to do with the fantastic competition we’ve been running to win tickets to the Al Gore lunch coming up on the 21st of September, (after all who can say no to a free lunch?), but we hope it’s more to do with more businesses recognising the opportunities that come from resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Congratulations to Ricardo Krauskopf, Alto Hotel on Bourke & Mary Barron, Brokemares By The Bay on being the winners for the lunch! I look forward to joining you for what I’m sure will be a fantastic event. For those of you who missed out, you can still purchase tickets for the lunch here.

Each month Grow Me The Money offers different prizes to businesses registering with the program and to businesses who are referring their colleagues. In September the first 10 businesses to register will receive a complimentary 12 month subscription to the Environment Business Magazine thanks to our partners, WME Media. A further 5 subscriptions will be available to businesses who refer other businesses into the program.

Businesses at the forefront of sustainability, such as yourselves, will be steadily making more and more savings as time progresses and also getting the credit and recognition you deserve for doing your bit to help our environment. And Grow Me The Money is here to help you with that! So congratulations to all the new participants and a special thank you to those that have referred new businesses to the program. If you’d like to see a list of the businesses currently registered with the program and what club level they have attained then simply follow this link: http://www.growmethemoney.com.au/RegisteredBusinesses.

Best regards,

Kate Nicolazzo

How Can I Access Grow Me The Money Mentors?

All you Participants have probably heard about our wonderful Mentors and have been reading their Mentor profiles in the Participants HQ area (click here if you haven't).

You may also have been wondering how you can access these Grow Me The Money experts and their wealth of advice and information.

There are two ways:

1. You can access Mentor information and advice by joining the Grow Me The Money Forum (it’s very simple and quick to do!) and posting a question in the ‘Ask an Expert’ section. When you post a question, we will make sure an appropriate mentor (or mentors!) answer your query.

2. When you have completed the Mentor Matching Activity in the Activity Centre of your My HQ you can call or email the Helpdesk to request help from a Mentor. This Mentoring comes in a variety of forms and you can speak to the Helpdesk to find out the most appropriate way for your business to benefit from Mentoring.end of article

Exciting Developments for Mentoring at Grow Me The Money.

The Mentors' Information and Skills Session on Thursday the 30th of August was a wonderful opportunity for Grow Me The Money Mentors to meet each other, and the Grow Me The Money team, and share their wide-ranging experiences with business sustainability.

Even better, this wealth of experience is now accessible to Grow Me The Money Participants – just see our ‘How Can I Access Grow Me The Money Mentors?’ article in this edition of the e-bulletin.

If you are a Mentor that was unable to make it to the lunch, we will send you out an Info Pack soon, and make contact to find out how we can get you involved in the Program. Alternatively, give the Grow Me The Money Helpdesk a call and we can have a chat about Mentoring today! end of article

Renewable Energy: The Key to Sustainability in Regional Australia

You need to make your region sustainable, right? That means you need to find a source of energy that’s renewable and doesn’t cost the earth or destroy it.

This is good news for regional areas. Many of the developments in renewable energy work at a regional level. For example, using waste wood to create gases to produce energy is only viable if the wood is grown near the plant where it’s burnt. Gases are then harvested to create energy near where that energy is used. Such plants are already powering homes and business in Scandinavian countries. Maybe we could do this in Australia too.

If you’d like to find out more about renewable energy and how we can make it work, get along to the Renewable Energy and Regional Australia conference in Bendigo on Sept 16-18.

View the conference program by clicking here. To register, phone (03) 5434 6001. end of article

2007 Victoria Summit

In 2005 VECCI, in partnership with the Australian Government, the State Government of Victoria and the City of Melbourne, conducted the inaugural Victoria Summit at Parliament House, Melbourne. Key to the success of the 2005 Summit was an ongoing series of forums and workshops designed to identify challenges and formulate recommendations in key areas of energy, skills, trade, infrastructure and cooperative federalism.

VIC Summit logo

The 2007 Victoria Summit will take the next step and not only address the key issues associated with changes in the economy and society associated with globalisation and competition from lowcost economies, but issues of climate change and the need to manage carbon outputs, increasing population and scarce water resources.

The Summit will explore four key areas in promoting a productive and sustainable Victoria into the future, including:

  • Greening the Industrial Ecology
  • Life and Opportunity in a Carbon-Managed Economy
  • Localising Skills and Education
  • Community Participation in Parks and Waterways Sustainability

  • You are invited to participate in the policy development and consultation process leading up to VECCI’s 2007 Victoria Summit™.

We value your views and experiences on many of the key issues relating to important Summit topic areas and would be grateful if you could spare a few moments and share these thoughts with us by answering a series of short questions on the topics we are canvassing with key stakeholders.

Your input will be treated in strict confidence.  Please go to the VECCI website at www.vecci.org.au and click on the Victoria Summit icon at the top of the page to access the questions. end of article

Grow Me The Money’s Recommended Book of the Month

    Jared Diamand's Collapse: book review

In their thought-provoking book "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things" on how we make (and subsequently dispose of) products, William McDonough and Michael Braungart have attempted to show us a whole new way of using our scarce resources.

Instead of opting for the traditional path of simply minimising our environmental impact by partially recycling what we can, the authors propose that we look at the bigger picture and adjust our production methods so that we can completely recycle everything we make without any loss in quality. As well as discussing countless ideas and case studies they’ve come across or come up with themselves, they have tried to put their money where their mouth is and delivered it all in a 100% truly recyclable package.

The actual book itself (made from plastic resin) is a tangible prototype of what the authors call a product that, “celebrates its materials instead of apologizing for them.” Whether you’re involved in making things or simply a consumer, this book won’t fail to get you thinking about the cleverer ways we can do things if we’re willing to give them a try. Highly recommended!

David Keddie, Grow Me The Money Helpdesk officer.

    Myth-Buster!

Myth: “Keeping your thermostat at the same temperature day and night uses less energy than turning it down at night and heating your room up again in the morning.”

Truth: It takes less energy to warm up a cold room in the morning than it does to maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.

    Heating Tips:

  • Setting the temperature lower just a few degrees can significantly reduce heating costs.
  • Dress appropriately for the seasons and the comfort level of your work area.
  • Close your blinds and drapes at night in the winter to keep the cold out.
  • Keep warm air registers clean and free of obstructions, such as furniture, carpets, and drapes.
