An Audience with Al Gore

For more information about the event, or if you would like to purchase a ticket for the luncheon, please visit http://www.globalbusinessforum.com.au/

On the local front, the Grow Me The Money team recently had the delightful opportunity to visit one of our Mentors – The Alto Hotel on Bourke – to check out the great work they’ve been doing in the hotel to improve their environmental performance. The Alto Hotel has an impressive commitment to sustainability and has provided the first Mentor contribution to the eBulletin, with an article about sustainable toiletries below. The team found that Alto Hotel owners Suzanne and Ricardo Krauskopf have a lot of knowledge to share and we strongly encourage any of our participants in the accommodation or broader tourism sector to take up the opportunity to learn from them. Contact the helpdesk on 1800 309 650 to find out how.

A big thank you from the team to Ricardo and Suzanne Krauskopf for their hospitality, and to the staff at The Alto for such an enjoyable evening. Read more about The Alto Hotel in their case study on the Grow Me The Money website here

More recently, many of you would have seen or heard about the resignation of VECCI CEO, Neil Coulson. Neil has been a keen champion of Grow Me The Money and fundamental to the establishment and success of the program. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil for his support and leadership in getting the program up and running and we look forward to taking Grow Me The Money onwards and upwards!

Renewable Energy the Key to Sustainability in Regional Australia

You need to make your region sustainable, right? That means you need to find a source of energy that’s renewable and doesn’t cost the earth or destroy it.

This is good news for regional areas. Many of the developments in renewable energy work at a regional level. For example, using waste wood to create gases to produce energy is only viable if the wood is grown near the plant where it’s burnt. Gases are then harvested to create energy near where that energy is used. Such plants are already powering homes and business in Scandinavian countries. Maybe we could do this in Australia too.

If you’d like to find out more about renewable energy and how we can make it work, get along to the Renewable Energy and Regional Australia conference in Bendigo on Sept 17-18.

View the conference program by clicking here. To register, phone (03) 5434 6001.

Feathers and Fur at Grow Me The Money Photo Shoot

EPA Photo Shoot

Luckily the feathers and fur didn’t fly at our recent EPA and Grow Me the Money photo shoot, where some of our Participants showed what a wide range of businesses we have taking part in the program. The puppy came courtesy of David Berry from The Lost Dogs Home and the feather boas were on the lovely ladies Shari Cohen and Emma Shmidt from Music Theatre Australia. We also connected with our more scientific side with Murray Brown from the CSIRO and headed out doors with Grant Whyte and Greg Stuart from AMRS and Peter Smith from The Outdoor Education Group. And what photo shoot would be complete without Trevor White from the White Group in a smart business suit? Thank you again to all the Participants who took part, and look out for more promotional opportunities with Grow Me The Money in the near future.

Industry Water Saving Program – Expansion Announced

The State Government has recently launched the Water Management Action Plans (waterMAP) program, designed to further improve the water efficiency of industry.

Under the waterMAP program, Victoria’s top 2100 non-residential water users will be required to develop water efficiency plans by the end of the year.  The plans will identify how water is currently used, inefficiencies and opportunities for saving water, actions to implement conservation measures and costs to implement the actions.  Each customer will also be required to submit an annual progress update. Eligible companies will be contacted by their local water authority, and will be required to register by 14 September.

Grow Me The Money is working with the State Government and local water authorities to integrate the programs and ensure that business is not being asked to replicate work already underway.

For further information on waterMAP, please contact your local water authority.

Consumer opinions on climate change

This past June saw the release of the first annual World Environment Review poll, conducted in 14 countries.

Initiated by Jon Dee (Founder and Chairman of Planet Ark), this is the first international public opinion survey on climate change since the release of the latest IPCC report. The Australian survey revealed that 88.5% of Australians want the Government to take strong action against climate change, and 87.2% are aware that taking steps in their household against climate change could save them money on their energy bills. Only 12.8% are unaware of this. However, the survey also shows that people could do more to reduce their personal carbon emissions. For example, less than half of Australians turn off appliances at the plug before going to the bed, and only a third has taken public transport in the previous two weeks.

On a positive note, 92% of Australians are concerned about the future of the environment. Also, half of Australians polled said that they would switch to renewable energy in the future and in the past week, 31.8% say they have not bought fresh produce because it had come from an international source and had likely been transported hundreds or thousands of miles. For more information and to view the top 50 Australian findings, visit this website.

Sustainable toiletries for accommodation providers: Mentor Case Study Alto Hotel.

One of Grow Me The Money’s Mentors, the Alto Hotel on Bourke, have had a strong focus on the environmental sustainability of their business since they established themselves at their new location in 2004/5. As well as occupying purpose built premises that incorporate many environmentally responsible features such as energy efficiencies and water recycling, they are always keen to implement new ideas to improve their sustainability performance.

One such initiative that they are keen to share with Grow Me The Money participants is their policy of removing disposable shower/bath toiletries from their customer bathrooms and replacing those with refillable dispensers. This has resulted in significant economic returns as well as reducing their environmental impact.

On the environment side, they have now stopped sending the numerous used shampoo, conditioner and body wash bottles to landfill. 90% of the time these bottles were also not empty so this means that they have prevented those liquids and the chemicals that make up the plastic bottles from breaking down in landfill and ultimately reaching our groundwater systems.

Financially, the Alto Hotel quickly covered the cost of fitting the new dispensers and is now actively saving money through the savings it has made by not purchasing individual bottles.

The customer feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive with guests commenting enthusiastically on the stylish design of the dispensers and the environmental benefits. Alto Hotel purchased their dispenser systems from Lifestyle Initiatives Pty Ltd and are currently refilling them with soaps from Lombards. At this time they are aware that the soaps they are using are NOT any more environmentally-friendly than the soaps they were previously using and would be very happy to hear from anyone who has any suggestions as to where they could purchase organically safe soap products!

If any participants would like to know more about potentially switching to a dispenser system or to discuss other environmental initiatives in the accomodation sector, Grow Me The Money and Alto Hotel are happy to discuss such issues with you! Please feel free to contact Grow Me The Money Helpdesk for more information on a mentoring session with Alto Hotel!

Grow Me The Money’s Recommended Book of the Month

    Jared Diamand's Collapse: book review

In “Collapse”, internationally acclaimed geographer, environmentalist and writer, Jared Diamond, speaks to his audience about the steady rise and fall of civilizations around the globe and analyses how many of the collapses that have been witnessed have been predominantly due to the actions of societies themselves.

Using refreshingly jargon-free language and numerous compelling examples, Diamond demonstrates how environmental degradation and a lack of sensible preparation has destroyed once mighty civilizations and how it would be imprudent not to acknowledge the similar risks we face today.

Written with realism, but with an encouraging dose of optimism, this book will change the way you view history and look upon our shared future on this small planet.

David Keddie, Grow Me The Money Helpdesk officer.

    Myth-Buster!

Myth: “Leaving a light on uses less energy than turning it off and on several times.”

Truth: Although it is true that there is a very small power surge associated with turning on an incandescent or fluorescent light bulb, that surge is far outweighed by the extra power consumed by leaving that light on for even a few minutes.

    Tips:
    • Get into the habit of turning off lights when you leave a room. Placing stickers next to lights can help remind people to turn off lights.
    • Use natural day lighting when possible and reduce or eliminate artificial lighting. Day lighting has also been proven to have many positive psychological benefits too.
    • Use compact fluorescent lights instead of incandescent bulbs whenever you can. Compact fluorescents are 3-4 times more efficient than incandescent and last 10 times as long. Incandescent lights are being phased out in Australia due to regulation.

Discuss this topic in our online forum. Click on the FORUM main menu option on the Grow Me The Money website.

    Jargon-Buster!

Eutrophication – “The over-enrichment of a water body with nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorous. This is usually the result of fertiliser run-off from agriculture entering waterways and ultimately the ocean. It promotes excessive growth of algae that can damage water ecosystems, particularly in coastal areas."
