How long have you been involved in business sustainability?:
About ten years dealing with businesses but also have been environmentally active in the community and government sectors since the mid 80’s.
What do you consider your sustainability specialty?:
I’m a program designer and facilitator with an environmental science and resource management background. I facilitate businesses to conduct environment assessments, develop and implement strategic action plans with a strong focus on engagement and capacity building.
Why do you think businesses should work towards greater sustainability?:
Sustainability is core business. Every business has an intertwined Triple Bottom Line (economic, social & environmental) that results from ALL its business activities and relationships. If a business really wants to be a market leader for the long term then it needs to use resources efficiently, inspire staff productivity, be innovative and deliver product/service excellence with genuine credentials. Sustainability relates to all these things and more.
So perhaps the question is maybe not why should business consider greater sustainability – but why on earth not?
What’s your top sustainability tip?:
Be strategic, measure your progress and aim for continuous improvement. Start small and celebrate your successes to engage staff and steadily grow your program as a part of normal workplace practice. A good place to start is with a green office program to achieve good savings fairly easily, demonstrate leadership and communicate with the rest of the business.
