A term used when an organisation has, through a number of means, reduced the net amount of carbon dioxide equivalent it emits to zero. The first step is to determine ways of reducing overall energy use (through various energy conservation methods or with an energy assessment and associated changes implemented as needed). After energy use is reduced as much as possible through improved efficiencies and conservation, purchasing Green Power is the next step if possible (wind and solar are preferable). The final step is to offset an organisation’s carbon emissions by purchasing carbon offsets. This option should be used last, when energy use is unavoidable (for necessary air travel and the like).
